It’s been a big week for us at HGST. Tuesday, we announced a new suite of solutions that reflects our focus on storage as the heart of the data center.
Industry First Through Device Affinity
Over the past year, we have developed the most extensive Flash portfolio through the integration of technologies from HGST, Virident, sTec and VeloBit. This week, we introduced Virident Space™, the industry’s first server-side Flash clustering and volume management software. It’s ideal for shared storage applications like Oracle® RAC and Red Hat® Global File System that traditionally relied on dedicated SAN storage – in fact it can provide up to 5x the performance at 50% cost to accelerate Oracle RAC.
We also unveiled our NVMe-compliant Ultrastar® SN100 PCIe SSDs. NVMe standardization is critical. We listened and delivered one of the industry’s first NVMe-compatible solutions. You’ll be hearing more about NVMe in the coming weeks and HGST is committed to driving the next wave of server flash adoption with simplified system integration.
Hello Helium: Goodbye Air
HGST is the leader in helium technology, and this week we strengthened that leadership with two new solutions. Why does helium make a difference? Helium has only one-seventh the density of air – so replacing air with helium dramatically reduces the turbulence caused by the spinning disk, which enables high platter counts and increased capacity without sacrificing quality and reliability. Helium also cuts power consumption and results in lower operating temperature, improving TCO. We’re now shipping Ultrastar® He8, our second-generation helium filled HDD and the highest capacity helium drive widely available. Based on mainstream perpendicular magnetic recording (PMR) technology, the Ultrastar He8 can be deployed into any application or environment without tradeoffs in performance or device compatibility.
We’re also excited to be sampling a 10TB Helium HDD,the world’s first enterprise-grade 10TB HDD for cloud to cold storage applications, which sets a new standard in the industry for capacity leadership. By harnessing two complementary technologies – HelioSeal technology and Shingled Magnetic Recording (SMR) – we’re enabling a future design platform for HDDs and delivering unprecedented capacity points at accelerated time-to-market entry.
A New Storage Category: Active Archive
Data used to be “write once, and rarely read again” – but let’s face it, with social media, data analytics, and regulatory compliance, long-term data storage and active archive needs are growing. Traditionally, users looked to tape for high capacity archiving, but the offline nature of tape makes it unsuitable for today’s needs for active access. Active Archive solutions based on disk technologies provide fast access to meet the needs of new classes of data-centric applications. Accessibility of data is essential to unlocking its value. With Active Archive solutions, organizations will be able to capture and store more data efficiently and they will be more equipped to access a greater percentage of the data deemed valuable.
To address this need, we’ve announced the Active Archive platform, a new category of storage solution with high-density peta-scale capacities in a single rack.
